In this entry, I am going to write about educational games and the impact these games can have on your child’s knowledge and learning. I will include information about how video games can have a positive impact on your child and I will give examples of good educational games.

To start off, you probably think games are useless and don’t give your child anything beneficial apart from conveying aggression and some sort of entertainment to your child. Well, you’re wrong! Not entirely as there are really good video games out there that teach your child key skills that will help them in school and in their future life. If you think that your child is struggling in school, there are plenty of games that teach maths, english, managing money and creativity that can help them in school. So many positive things games can teach your child.

As an example, there is a game called “LittleBigPlanet”, in this game, the player plays as a sackboy. You have to complete levels by solving logical problems and using your creativity. A lot of objects in the game can be manipulated to be used to your advantage. On top of that, the player can create their own worlds and manipulate everything in them. It improves creativity and is genuinely fun to play. The player can then later customise their own sackboy as well as their “space pod”. Once the player creates their own level, they can then make it available for the community to play and try to complete it. The game was made to teach kids science, technology, engineering and maths all outside of the classroom. There have also been sequels made to this game, “LittleBigPlanet 2”, and, “LittleBigPlanet 3”. With every game, there are new stuff added that teach more things to kids. For example, in number 2 there were bots added that interact with you in the world. The player could then use those bots in their own environment and make them do certain actions. This would essentially teach an element of “programming”, or ,“Engineering”. For young kids that can give insight into how robots are made in real life.

Another example of a game that can teach kids is Reader Rabbit. This game was made in 1983. This game was aimed at kids in as early as infancy and up to the age of eight. It taught kids how to read by making them do fun games. It was made for entertainment but mainly to teach kids how to read. It was made in a style that appeals to young kids as they are many animals in the game that lead the child through it.

Video Games are not as bad as you probably thought. There are many other examples of games that can teach your child skills necessary for their future life. On top of that, educational games can improve your child’s learning at school. Video games are not just malicious forms of media that give no benefit. Now you know that there are “good games” that can teach useful skills instead of violence and aggression.
